The floating coffee table

Putting an optical illusion front and center in your living room, the Float Table is an artfully crafted piece of furniture made from a series of square wooden blocks that appear to be freely hovering above one another.

But much to David Blaine's dismay, magic isn't real; it's actually a matrix of wooden cubes packed with giant magnets held in equilibrium by a system of tensile steel cables, and it elastically deforms when you push on it. So be careful when you kick up your feet, unless you're into mopping up spilled beer.

Joe McGauley is a senior editor for Supercompressor and seriously considered a career in magic as a child. It didn't pan out.
