This Modern House Is Solid As A Rock. Literally.

There's an old Sunday School song that taught generations of kids that "the wise man built his house upon the rock, and the house on the rock stood firm." Biblical allusions and allegories aside, that's some fairly sound architectural advice.

The designers at Seattle's Olson Kundig firm, who built The Pierre house, must have spent some time in church as kids. Because this gorgeous modern home isn't just built upon rocks—it's built into them.

The Pierre—French, for stone—takes advantage of the natural surroundings of the land, incorporating the rock and grassy knoll into the exterior.

The interiors are all built to complement the natural aesthetic, using materials like mild steel, concrete, wood, and drywall.

Of course, the natural rock and stone are utilized in the interior design as well.

Unsurprisingly, the design has won a slew of awards, both on the local and national level. Next time you're building a home, maybe you should think about building on a rock. It'll have a firm foundation—and it can be damn good looking, too.
