In case you're too busy scouring the Internet for a TurboGrafx-16 to remember that SXSW kicks off tomorrow in Austin, we tapped Nick Balkin, bassist with Hub city-country/ Americana rockers Kinglsey Flood, for a few of his fave hits from homegrown bands who'll also be making the trek South...By SouthWest:
The Beatings - "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained"
This track from the four-dudes-and-a-chick noise-rockers' sixth studio album features heart-pounding drums, noisy guitar riffs, addictive melodies, and gritty vocals, but not gritty locals, as none of this song took place in Revere.
Bodega Girls - "Ain't That Cold"
Soulful throat-shredding lead vocals and a simple-yet-devastatingly effective guitar line anchor this gem from the 2010 Boston Music Award's Electronic Artist of the Year, who just happen to share a drummer with Kingsley Flood, which is just a convenient coincidence and has nothing to do with this song's selection at all, OK? Be cool!
Mean Creek - "The Comedian"
The epic set-closer from these guitar-heavy rockers who borrowed their name from the 2004 indie flick has been described as "Joe Henry on a slow-burning Pink Floyd jag", also what Randall from Dazed and Confused drove when he got older, and actually signed a contract.
Viva Viva - "Keep Lookin', Good Lookin'"
Bluesy, Stones-y badassery from a bunch of dudes who originally met in JP and believe they're the "second greatest band in the world" -- you've still got the crown for now, Semisonic!
Aloud - "Fan the Fury"
Despite having mellowed from their brash percussion-throbbing punk rock days, you'll love this track from the now-dual vocal/guitarist guy-gal twosome for its "shouted fist-in-the-air-in-the-land-of-hypocrisy vocals and cranked guitar amps" -- phew, good thing they calmed down.
David Wax Museum - "Born With A Broken Heart"
Described as "fusing traditional Mexican folk with country, folk, and rock to create an utterly unique Mexo-Americana aesthetic," this song from the much-hyped/NPR-touted Americana duo will put you in an instant good mood, assuming you also have a bunch of uppers, and at least two Diet Jolts.
