At the turn of last century, boxing matches were held outdoors, mainly because the fledgling Moppers Union refused to clean up blood without thunderstorm assistance. Tonight, Church Street Gym once again brings back open-air pugilism, with their Rumble on the River. The RotR's a free event showcasing local amateur-level boxers in a USA Boxing-sanctioned, open-air fist fest. All weight classes are represented, with contestants ranging from experienced to novice (10 fights or fewer). Ten 3-4 round bouts are scheduled, but there's generally at least one no-show due to illness, injury, or intimidation from amateur-level mobsters. Gates to the immense concrete pier open at 7pm; for prime spots the organizers suggest you arrive at 6:30, then hit the ID tent immediately for a drinking wristband. Sponsored beer Sapporo'll be sold for $4 at a stand, and by sweaty, stadium-style vendors cruising the crowd with ice tubs and screaming, "Hot Dogs! Ice Cold Sapporo!" If you have reservations about pure fisting, there'll also be footing, with a few Muay Thai matches thrown in for nose-breaking variety. Stick around afterwards, and watch the Moppers Local 328 use new-fangled hoses to spray the aftermath into the Hudson.
