Applebee’s Bartender Claims $1 Margaritas Aren’t What They Seem

Applebee’s recently began offering “Dollaritas,” aka Margaritas that cost just one dollar, for the entire month of October. If that sounds too good to be true, that may be the case; someone claiming to be an Applebee’s bartender is saying that the Dollaritas are extremely watered down.

An anonymous alleged Applebee’s employee filmed several videos on Snapchat with the captions, “This is your dollarita: one gallon of marg mix concentrate; Add one gallon of our bottom shelf tequila; Top it all off with three gallons of water. Now you have a five gallon marg mix.”

The Snapchatter in question went on to say, “The dollarita is literally 1 part cheap tequila, 1 part cheap marg mix, 3 parts tap water. We go through 12 gallons of this swill a day … If the ‘Dollarita is your life,’ you’re an animal who can’t taste things.” The Snapchats have since gone viral.

According to the Daily Mail, one customer backed up the claim in an online post saying, “I went to ours Thursday night after work and I told the waitress it tasted like water and she said what do you expect for a one dollar Margarita.”

Applebee’s began the Dollarita promotion in honor of their “Neighborhood Appreciation Month,” to thank their loyal customers, and people understandably went nuts, praising the chain for the incredible deal.

A spokesperson for Applebee’s denied the claim, and questioned whether or not the Snapchatter was actually employed by the chain, telling Fox News, “We have not been able to confirm that this is an Applebee’s bartender, and the person in the video did not follow the proper preparation instructions for the Dollarita.” According to the spokesperson, the recipe should be one part tequila to three parts Margarita mix, with no water.

“Despite not knowing whether or not this video was valid, we reached out immediately to our franchisees to reiterate the correct approach to making our Margarita that is being offered in restaurants nationwide for $1 as our Neighborhood Appreciated Drink,” the spokesperson added.

Whether or not the video was legit (though it is branded with an Applebee’s geo-tag filter), the attention it put on the chain should ensure that the Dollaritas are made with the proper amount of tequila, so we can get back to enjoying an unlimited amount of drinks for the rest of October.
