Hillary Clinton supporters still dusting themselves off after the presidential election now have the perfect drink to fuel their spirited perseverance: Rodham Rye. D.C.-based distillery Republic Restoratives had originally planned to release the whiskey in celebration of our first female president, but owners Pia Carusone and Rachel Gardner decided to push ahead with the spirit despite the election results, recasting the rye as an homage to strong female figures of history. It may be just the inspirational hair of the dog that Hilldog democrats need to recover from their electoral hangover.
According to The Washingtonian, Carusone is adamant about the metaphorical significance of the whiskey for like-minded voters at this political moment. She refers to the blend of ryes as “a selection of whiskies that are stronger together than apart.” The distiller also points out that rye is the most resilient of the grains used to make whiskey, while the water for the spirit comes from springs in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, an area Clinton worked to protect as a state senator.
But the whiskey isn’t all talk. Republic Restoratives will debut the rye on March 25 at a public forum entitled “How to Support Women in the Age of Trump,” and 5 percent of each $80 bottle will go to Emily’s List, which supports pro-choice, female democratic candidates.
While the initial release is limited to under 5,000 bottles, we’re sure to see more from this indomitable spirit company. Like Carusone says, “You never know, there could be a comeback.”
