London’s Dandelyan Named World’s Best Cocktail Bar
On Saturday, the Champagne flowed for London’s Dandelyan cocktail bar, which edged out three other finalists at the annual Spirited Awards to take home the top honor of 2017’s World’s Best Cocktail Bar. The awards show, which is one of the closing events each year at the annual cocktail and spirits convention Tales of the Cocktail, is known as the “Oscars of the cocktail scene.”
Dandelyan was up against Washington D.C.’s Columbia Room and Melbourne’s Black Pearl in various categories, but managed to sweep the competition, also taking home awards for Best International Hotel Bar and Best International Bar Team.
Located in the Mondrian Hotel in London, Dandelyan is known for its expertly made and inventive cocktails and impressive emerald and rosy pink interior. The bar is the brainchild of Ryan Chetiyawardana, who, in 2015, took home the title of World's Best Bartender at the Spirited Awards. Its current menu, themed Vices of Botany, divides cocktails like the Lonely Heart Killers (Plantation Rum, Barbancourt Rum, tonka, lilac and guava) and All Tomorrow’s Parties (Kew Gardens Organic Gin, toasted rice, green tea, grapefruit and soy sugar) into four categories—Faith, Lust, Currency and Rock 'n' Roll—and serves a variety of classic and booze-free cocktails.
The Spirited Awards also gave top honors to Jeff Bell of New York’s PDT, (“American Bartender of the Year”), Washington D.C.’s Columbia Room (“Best American Cocktail Bar”), Melbourne’s Black Pearl (“Best International Cocktail Bar”) and Shingo Gokan of Shanghai’s Speak Low (“International Bartender of the Year”).
