Lyft is getting into the beer business, because nothing goes together like beer and needing a ride home. As of January 18, a Lyft-branded beer called Five Star Lager will be sold in Chicago with discount codes of up to $5 on every can.
“We know through data that nightlife is one of our largest business segments, especially going out on a Friday or Saturday night,” David Katcher, a general manager for Lyft, told the Chicago Tribune. “Harder [to understand] is the psychology of how they decide to get home and when they decide to make that happen. That’s a little more art than science.”
You know what else is both art and science? Beer. Lyft is partnering with a Chicago brewery called Baderbrau Brewing for the actual production and distribution of the beer. The beer is Baderbrau’s South Side Pride, which is a light and easy drinking lager—the perfect palate cleansing end to a night of drinking.
Five Star Lager will start out in 10 yet-to-be-announced Chicago bars, then more in a few months, according to the Chicago Tribune. If the initial trial run of 24,000 beers succeeds, Lyft could partner with breweries in other cities to spread the joy. Here’s hoping that Chicago takes full advantage of this so the rest of the country can drink for discounted rides.
