Every December, Google looks back on the previous year’s search history to find the top trends, terms and questions in a wide swath of categories. It then compiles that data into a series of End of Year Lists, and Supercall got a first look into the cocktails people loved most in 2017—or at least the cocktails they were most interested in Googling.
The top 10 cocktail searches, from No. 10 to No. 1, were as follows: the Irish Car Bomb, the Old Fashioned, the Cosmopolitan, the Bloody Mary, the Mai Tai, the Whiskey Sour, Sangria, the Hot Toddy, the Mojito and, coming in at No. 1, the Margarita.
This year’s list saw a lot of turnover. The appearance of the Irish Car Bomb seems like a bit of a wild card, but seeing the Cosmo—a highly underrated cocktail—making a comeback is heartening. Cocktails on last year’s list that didn’t make the cut this year include the White Russian, Mimosa, Rusty Nail, Sex on the Beach, Strawberry Daiquiri and Martini.
But what does it all mean? Well, for one, people appear to be having a bit of a brunch crisis as they move from the light and low alcohol Mimosa to the boozier Bloody. Also, the Old Fashioned, the most ordered cocktail in 2016 according to Drinks International, is finally slipping a little in popularity. A recent Nielsen survey tracked with Google’s data, with 58 percent of women and 44 percent of men claiming the Margarita as their favorite cocktail.
These trends will likely shift again next year, according to bartenders that Supercall spoke with. The “it” cocktails of 2018 will return to simple classics like the Martini and Gin & Tonic, and there will likely be more mezcal and rum on menus. Until then, keep enjoying your Margs.
