Long is the history of the Olympics proving insolvent for host nations. Montreal, host of the 1976 Olympic Games, took 30 years to pay off its $1.48 billion Olympic debt -- and by the time it did, the main tenant of Olympic Stadium, the Expos, had already fled town for Washington, DC. While the games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, cost an estimated $12 billion thus far, previous hosts have spent even more, coming away with even less. Estimates suggest Beijing spent upwards of $40 billion to host the games in 2008, while others say Sochi cost Russia a whopping $51 billion dollars.
Rather than just digging into numbers, though, photos show how impractical building these structures proves over time. Part of the pitch of hosting the Olympics involves long-term utility -- but these photos, uploaded to Imgur, suggest otherwise.
