Both the repugnant behavior of passengers and the ease with which you can piss off your flight attendant are well documented -- especially on this website. But rarely do the two collide -- quite literally -- in the way they did last week.
According to a report in the Aviation Herald, an altercation between two flight attendants on a Delta plane traveling from Los Angeles to Minneapolis on Jan. 22 devolved into a brawl within an hour of takeoff. Per the report, "two flight attendants disagreeing over work issues engaged in a fist fight," while "a third lady trying to calm the other two down was hit by the flying fists." And you thought getting hit with the beverage cart was bad.
The plane's pilot contacted air traffic control, saying he wanted to divert to "hear from his flight attendants." The plane subsequently diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport for about 80 minutes before it continued on to Minneapolis.
On Monday, Delta confirmed the kerfuffle to The Washington Post, as well as apologizing for the inconvenience to its passengers.
“Delta apologizes to those customers who were inconvenienced after flight 2598 from Los Angeles to Minneapolis-St. Paul made an unscheduled stop in Salt Lake City following an altercation involving two flight attendants on board,” the statement read. “The actions of these crew members in no way reflect the values and professionalism we expect from all of our employees.”
The airline said it offered airline miles to its frequent flyers and travel vouchers to non-frequent flyers.
Either way, they sure got a better show than if Taken 3 were the in-flight movie.
