Because we're all (mostly) adults here, it should go without saying that having too much to drink isn't a good look for anyone. But will exercising restraint and turning down a cocktail at a social gathering make you seem any more appealing to others? Well, new research suggests that how much you have to drink could greatly influence how attractive people perceive you to be, and it's fantastic news if you enjoy hitting up happy hour.
In fact, researchers at the University of Houston found that people who drink socially and responsibly are actually seen as more attractive than heavy drinkers and people who lay off the booze entirely, according to a report by Yahoo! Health. In other words, a super easy and enjoyable thing that you're already doing all the time makes you sexy. And here you were thinking it was just your sweet man bun...
Published in the journal Addictive Behaviors, the study involved 594 straight college students who were asked to look at 25 photos showing the faces of people of the opposite sex, each of which were labeled as either a non-drinker, social drinker, heavy drinker, or recovering alcoholic maintaining sobriety. Then, the participants were asked to rate each person on their perceived intelligence, attractiveness, likability, and approachability, per the report. The participants rated social drinkers as the most attractive, followed by recovering alcoholics, non-drinkers, and lastly, heavy drinkers.
Researchers believe the participants based their ratings on their own drinking habits; for example, students who themselves were heavy drinkers tended to favorably rate photos showing heavy drinkers more than other types of drinkers. In other words, the results show that you'll probably gravitate toward someone who has drinking habits similar to your own. So, next time you're out drinking at a bar or at a party, it seems like two drinks will do the trick. As always, drink responsibly. And sexy, of course.
