Top Ramen, Cup Noodles, or some generic version of instant ramen was likely a diet staple during your college and post-college years. There might even be a leftover pack/cup tucked somewhere in your cupboard right now. And though the preserved noodles were such a constant part of your life for so long, you most likely never thought about the history of the product. Well, here you go.
Great Big Story just published a video outlining the complete history of instant noodles, which all started because of one man's dream to end a hunger crisis in Japan after WWII. Yep. These noodles are so much more than just an easy dinner.
Momofuku Ando experimented again and again to make a ramen that was non-perishable in order to save his people, and the answer finally came to him when he tried flash-frying the noodles in his wife's tempura oil. From there, Top Ramen and Cup Noodles were born.
Watch the video for the full story. It's almost two minutes, which is about the time it takes to cook instant ramen. Coincidence? Yeah, probably.
