If The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave shows five stars for you on Netflix, that's not because it's a timeless, well-reviewed classic. It just means that Netflix is well aware that you really, really like cartoon dinosaurs. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
According to a report in BGR, Netflix ratings are personalized, meaning the star rating is not an average based on user reviews alone. Instead, this rating is based on reviews from users with a "similar entertainment taste" to you. The subjective rating is then pulled into the recommendation algorithm, which Netflix says grabs three factors:
1. The genres of movies and TV shows available.
2. Your streaming history, and previous ratings you’ve made.
3. The combined ratings of all Netflix members who have similar tastes in titles to you.
Essentially, this all means that this also means Netflix gives you more precise recommendations that suit your specific tastes, and a star rating for the same movie could differ for you, an action movie lover, than from your friend, a sucker for rom-coms.
But everybody can agree I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry fulfills nobody's desires.
