From dessert-like caramel waffle cone Frappuccinos to a whole new lineup of cold brew coffee drinks, it seems like Starbucks has a new summer menu item every other week (not that we're complaining). And now, the coffee giant has unleashed yet another cold drink for the season -- this time, in the form of shaved-ice beverages called Granitas.
The new drinks come in three flavors -- Caramel Espresso, Teavana Youthberry White Tea, and Strawberry Lemon Limeade -- and will be available as part of Starbucks' Sunset Menu every day after 3pm, starting Tuesday, June 14th. Starbucks said the beverages were inspired by the classic Italian ice. As for the name, well, what do you expect from the people who say grande instead of medium?
“We wanted something that was cool, but light,” Michelle Sundquist, a member of the company's beverage development team, said in a press release. Here's how Starbucks describes each of the three Granita flavors:
Caramel Espresso Granita: A scoop of slightly sweetened, finely shaved ice topped with bold espresso shots, a splash of cream, and finished with caramel drizzle.
Strawberry Lemon Limeade Granita: A scoop of lemonade flavored, finely shaved ice blended with strawberry slices and topped with house-made limeade.
Teavana Youthberry White Tea Granita: Refreshing lemonade flavored, finely shaved ice topped with Teavana Youthberry White tea that combines white tea, pineapple, acai and hibiscus.
Just like the new Frappuccinos introduced over the last few weeks, the Granitas will only be available for a limited time this summer. Interestingly, there are no plans to make them an entirely new major menu category next to espresso drinks and Frappuccinos, according to a Starbucks spokesperson.
