With the long Fourth of July weekend nearly upon us (you can make it!), now's as good a time as any to celebrate the more than 40 different styles of hot dogs you can find all across the United States. But while you've probably heard of a Chicago-style hot dog or a Fenway Frank, there's a good chance you've never heard of anything quite like a new type of "hot dog" that's, well, actually ice cream.
That's right, folks, there's now such thing as hot dog ice cream, thanks to a new collaboration between famed chefs Nicholas Morgenstern of Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream in NYC and Daniel Boulud of Daniel, DBGB, and many others. After all, hot dogs are delicious and you can never go wrong with ice cream -- so smashing them together for a sweet, savory, and ultra-American hybrid just makes sense, right?
It's called the DBGB Cool Dog, and it's composed of Morgenstern's ice cream made with a DBGB hot dog, creme anglaise that comes topped with candied green cabbage, spicy honey mustard, and a blackberry-raspberry "ketchup." It's even served on a house-made Epicerie Boulud brioche bun, a Morgenstern's spokesperson said via email. Basically, it's as fancy as it is bizarre.
