David Brent has been out of sight for a long time. But that will change this summer when Ricky Gervais brings the former paper company manager back in a movie titled David Brent: Life on the Road. The above trailer, released over the weekend, is the first look at the movie that takes the office out of The Office.
The not-so-lovingly misguided Brent has followed his love of music since the end of the documentary about Wernham Hogg Paper Company. Now, the camera crew is following Brent's band, Foregone Conclusion, on the road as he attempts to be, or at least act like, a rock star.
Brent's love of music was well documented during the two seasons the show ran in the U.K., including in-office hits like "Free Love Freeway" and proclamations that he's basically a "chilled out entertainer." So, the plot isn't entirely out of nowhere.
Unfortunately for U.S. fans of the show, it's going to be awhile before it hits North America. The film is getting a theatrical release in U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand this summer. Everyone else has to wait until some time next year when Netflix — who Gervais worked with on Derek and the less-loved Special Correspondents — will release the movie. "[It's] great for me," Gervais said of working with Netflix on the Opie With Jim Norton Show last week, "because I'd rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas."
