Whether you're ready to accept it or not, the holidays are upon us (tomorrow is December!), which means you're probably about to be inundated with Starbucks gift cards from friends, family, and generous acquaintances. As the new coffee money rolls in, you can bank it to fund your morning Starbucks runs for the next month, or go and treat yourself to something fancier than a basic brewed coffee. Such as the new Holiday Spice Flat White, which debuts at Starbucks stores on Monday.
As we reported earlier this month, the fittingly titled drink is a seasonal take on the classic Flat White that Starbucks added to its permanent menu in January. The new spiced-up version is made by pouring two ristretto shots of Starbucks' spicy Christmas Blend Espresso Roast over a holiday mulling spice blend of ground sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and a dash of tangerine sugar. Then, the barista adds carefully foamed whole milk to the cup, allowing the golden crema of the espresso to rise to the top. Sounds fancy enough, right?
We were given an exclusive first taste of the new beverage ahead of its debut, and promptly felt the holiday spirit -- oh, and the caffeine shakes. At first sip, it's a velvety, espresso-forward drink (as a Flat White should be), but with the warm bite you feel when sipping a Chai Tea latte -- minus all that overpowering sweetness. In fact, we can happily report that the "holiday spice" flavors act as a subtle addition to the drink's strong espresso flavor and the sweet creaminess of the steamed milk.
