The Taste of Buffalo festival hosted the world's first kale eating competition on Saturday and, as these things go, the winner ate a disgusting amount of the bitter superfood. Gideon Oji ate 25.5 16-ounce containers of kale in just eight minutes to be crowned winner of a competition most people would rather not partake in.
Oji has been traveling the country partaking in eating competitions, finishing fourth in the famed Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on the Fourth of July. He's currently ranked 10th in Major League Eating's national ranks for competitive food eaters.
"I'm a health and fitness professional, and I've been on the road eating chicken, hot dogs, and all-American foods," Oji said after hoisting the trophy. "So winning the kale championship was personal for me. I believe in eating well and being healthy."
The Kale Yeah! competition was set up to highlight the healthy offerings available at Taste of Buffalo. It's the festival's tenth year of partnering with Independent Health Foundation's Healthy Options program, which requires each vendor to offer at least one healthy option on their menu.
Speed eating anything is probably terrible for your body, but housing a load of kale is definitely cleaner and better for you than, say, eating 192 chicken wings in 12 minutes.
