These Rum Brands Are Saving Baby Turtles

Here’s your deeply concerning statistic of the day: six out of seven species of sea turtles are endangered or threatened, according to the activist organization See Turtles. Now, aside from skipping the plastic straw in your drink, there’s a way you can help whether you’re five miles from the ocean or 5,000: drink some rum.

The Caribbean rum brand Ron Dos Maderas Luxus, owned by Bodegas Williams & Humbert, is working with See Turtles’ Billion Baby Turtle campaign to save 3,000 baby turtles from poaching and the black market. Money donated by the brand will go to protecting nesting beaches and aiding baby Squirts and future Crushes as they make their way from the sand to the waves.

“This collaboration with the campaign Billion Baby Turtles (help us save a billion turtles!) originates from the desire of Bodegas Williams & Humbert to create closer ties between the region from which its range of rums originates and in which these species, which play such an important role in conserving the environment, are in danger of extinction,” the brand said, according to The Drinks Business.

It’s not the first rum brand to help turtles. Naked Turtle rum partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy and led a “Kill the Lights, Save the Turtles” campaign to bring awareness to hatchling-harming light pollution. The little guys can use all of the help they can get. The Billion Baby Turtles campaign states that it’s saved more than a million turtles, which took more than 500 volunteers, 4,000 conservation patrols and conservation training for some 10,000 students. Raise a glass, in this case a glass a Dos Maderas, to brands doing all they can to help everyone’s favorite giant-shelled sea creature.
