South Korean Ambassador Chugs Tequila With Mexico Fans After Beating Germany
When Mexico beat the defending champion Germany in the World Cup, fans cheered so hard that they triggered a minor seismic event in Mexico. When South Korea beat Germany, which sent Mexico to the next round, South Korea’s ambassador to Mexico downed tequila straight from the bottle.
A Twitter user caught the celebration on video shortly after Korea’s win. Mexico football fans ran to the Korean embassy, where general consul Byung-Jin Han was outside. They quickly brought him into the party and handed him a bottle of tequila. In a sign of true unity, Han grabbed the bottle without a second thought and took a fat swig, setting off a chant of “Koreano Hermano, ya eres Mexicano” (“Korean brother, you are now Mexican.”)
Re: Korea defeating Germany, thus allowing Mexico to progress to the next round--this video of Mexican fans bumrushing the Korean embassy in Mexico City to thank the ambassador personally, and forcing him to down tequila shots is so beautiful and perfect 😂 #KORGER pic.twitter.com/E1GeZCRrlK— Very Stable Genius (@Rantaramic) June 27, 2018
The shot, to say the least, is impressive. It lasts three seconds as Han tilts the bottom of the bottle to the sky. After he finishes, he dusts his chest off like it’s just another Wednesday at the office before raising his hands in celebration.
Korea’s 2-0 win over Germany was Mexico’s only chance of advancing out of the group stage of the World Cup. Mexico will play Brazil on July 2. Korea didn’t advance, but it appears they have some new friends to cheer for in the next round. Sports and tequila can unite the world.
