Do you fancy yourself a gin expert? Well, now you can put your knowledge to the test and earn a diploma in your favorite junipery spirit. The Edinburgh Whisky Academy is offering the world’s first gin diploma starting on April 19.
The certification covers six topics: the history of gin, the gin renaissance, the current state of gin, distillation, sensory tasting and cocktails. The EWA states on its website that “whether you are new to gin, a gin lover or work in spirits or hospitality, this course offers something for everyone and is guaranteed to expand your knowledge of gin.” The course will be taught by gin expert Geraldine Coates (from the site Gin Time and author of numerous gin books), and the diploma is certified by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, an international accreditation organization.
The world’s first gin diploma is coming at a good time for people new to gin and gin lovers alike. Last year, new gin brands popped up all over the world with a number of new American gins, as well as bottlings from Japan, Canada and Ireland. Not to mention all of the gin distilleries in London. Even the University of Oxford got into gin production in early 2018. Clearly there’s a lot to learn about.
But the best part about becoming a member of the first group of people with an official gin diploma? You can get it all done in one day. That should leave you with plenty of time to bask in the summer sun, dropping gin facts on your friends while sipping seasonal gin cocktails.
