Even as shows like GCB depict our fair city as the sort of backwater that would hold the season's biggest, richest, whitest, most self-congratulatory social event at the State Fair, Dallas is being recognized as a world capital by a far more respected arbiter: Morelli's Gelato, who just opened their first US outpost inside Uptown's Zaguan Bakery.
Morelli's roots date back to 1907 in Kent, England, when an Italian immigrant began selling his good stuff from a bicycle; his son launched a brick-n-mortar in '32, and from there very selectively expanded to Harrod's in London and Casino Square in Monte Carlo, plus oil-enriched locales from Dammam to Abu Dhabi, whose citizens can often be heard saying "I'm tired of supporting the rest of the UAE economically, let's go get an exotic frozen treat". They don't screw around with ingredients even a little, topping milk-based flavors including hazelnut and dulce de leche with the likes of Sri Lankan coconut, Ghanese cocoa, Brazilian coffee, and Sicilian pistachios, in sundaes served in martini glasses (whether or not "two is too many, three is too few" still applies, you and your bong will have to determine for yourselves).
Morelli's also whips out the Nutella for crepes, and isn't afraid to sandwich that good stuff between two cookies. Hey, that sounds like an authentic Texas euphemism -- somebody call Annie Potts!
