Covering a classic requires equal parts reimagination and reverence, e.g. Jeff Buckley's falsetto rendering of Leonard Cohen, or Hillary Duff's pop-anthem-style "My Generation" -- to which her own generation responded "Who?" For classic bar homage, hit The Owl Tree.<
The guys who brought you Bruno's and Harry's Bar have reopened the late great C. Bobby's Owl Tree -- honoring the old spot's wingy motif by replacing its sprawling oldtimey kitsch with swank but equally owlish decor.
The exterior's done up with twin scowling owl mosaics, while inside plush black-leather booths are separated by owl-engraved glass, and the 20ft mahoganey bar's lorded over by intricately sandblasted owled mirrors (owl you glad we didn't make a Hooter joke?).
Booze-wise, OT pours 16 int'l brews & 12 Norcal wines, stocks a solid collection of single malts, high-end tequilas, and absinthes (Kübler, St George, etc), and premiums up timeless cocktails with Fever Tree mixers -- also served at Bourbon & Branch, their exotic ingredients include everything from Ecuadorian green ginger to Congolese quinine (so the same stuff that protects child soldiers of malaria'll cure you of "a bad case of the Mondays").
Leading up to the still-unfinished upstairs is a glass-encased shrine to C. Bobby himself: a painted portrait of the man, a golf trophy, a martini shaker, and some kitschy wooden owls -- which should clear things up if you were wondering, "Hoo are you? Hoo hoo hoo hoo?"
