The market for smarthome gadgets is booming. A thermostat that knows what temp you want it? Check. Locks that automatically arm when you walk out the door? Yep. Mood lighting you can tweak by simply tapping your smartphone? Phillips is alllll over that. But with so many brands developing these things independently, controlling them all can be a real pain, since each one requires its own app to manage. That's where Revolv comes in.
These 3 Gadgets Are Your Summertime Essentials
Now available to pre-order for just $299, the puck-shaped unit enables you to control them all on one app interface, as it boasts a record-breaking seven wireless radios, and "speaks" a whopping 10 different wireless languages (a huge advantage, since smarthome devices don't all speak the same one). It currently supports 20 different popular products — including the Nest thermostat, Sonos products, GE wall switches, and Kwikset locks — and's on track to add hundreds in the next year.
To get it up and running, just find a central area with good WiFi reception and plug it in. When you boot up the app, you'll see a home screen displaying an overview of all your devices: which are currently in use, their recent activity, and control any on-demand actions for each.
Bringing a date home and want to set the mood at the touch of a button, where the lights dim, the groovy playlist starts, and your gas fireplace ignites? Easy. There's a feature that allows you to program certain simultaneous actions for all (or a select few) devices that're triggered when you press a custom-labeled button.
You can even set up proximity automation, like having your lights and locks turn on/off based on the location of your phone.
