The Acapulco cocktail is the beautiful love child of a Hemingway Daiquiri and a Margarita. Originally from (you guessed it) Acapulco, Mexico, it combines the best of both worlds for rum and tequila lovers. Acapulco—a beach town on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico that is known as a haven for spring breakers and vacationers—has a reputation for its high energy nightlife. It’s also the perfect place for tropical drinks like its namesake libation. The Acapulco cocktail uses a mix of reposado tequila and white rum as the base. The lightly aged tequila gives the drink some depth while the rum keeps things light. The fruity mix of lime, pineapple and grapefruit juices gives it an extra refreshing flavor.

To make the perfect Acapulco cocktail, you need to choose the right types of tequila and rum. We suggest using a tequila that has a little body to it without being overwhelming. VeYa Reposado will add a tasty vanilla note, while Don Julio Reposado will lend long and heavy flavors of chocolate as well as notes you’d traditionally find in a bourbon. For the rum, Flor De Cana Blanco Reserva will pack a ton of flavor into the drink. The Nicaraguan rum is a seven-year-old spirit that’s charcoal filtered to remove the color. What it doesn’t remove is the sweet vanilla flavor. With the right tequila and the right rum (plus fresh squeezed juices, of course) the Acapulco is the perfect summertime libation that will instantly transport you to the beach.
