Bahama Mama

From beachside bars to tiki bars to cruise ships to Applebee’s, the Bahama Mama is a ubiquitous cocktail that screams, “Vacation.” Its origins are unknown, as is its official recipe. Some neon pink variations include banana liqueur and sour mix, but we prefer a more balanced mix of fresh juices and Caribbean spirits like Tia Maria coffee liqueur and Myers’s Dark Rum.

  • .5 oz Dark Rum
  • .25 oz Tia Maria
  • .5 oz Coconut Rum
  • .25 oz 151 rum
  • .5 oz lemon juice
  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • .25 oz grenadine
  • orange and cherry

Step one

Place all ingredients except the garnish into a shaker with ice and shake.

Step two

Strain into a hurricane glass using a Hawthorne strainer and add fresh ice.

Step three

Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.

Mix It Up!

If you’re craving a Bahama Mama that leans more towards the ultra-sweet, replace the coffee liqueur with banana liqueur and the dark rum with light rum. Just make sure to still use homemade grenadine, since the bottled stuff will push it into saccharine territory.
