Bloody Mary Mix

You can buy premade Bloody Mary mix at the store. You end up with a perfectly acceptable Bloody Mary. But it is not the best Bloody Mary. To make the best Bloody Mary—one that really excites your tastebuds and reflects exactly what you want out of the brunch drink—you need to make your own mix from scratch. Luckily, it’s not too hard. We’re not saying you have to juice your own tomatoes or make your own hot sauce (although that would certainly make for a uniquely delicious drink). All you have to do is buy some good quality tomato juice, squeeze in a couple of lemons and add some spices you probably already have in your kitchen. The first time you make the mix, follow our measurements (we think they create the optimal balance of acid, salt and spice). But the second time you make the mix, feel free to adjust the measurements according to your own personal tastes. Don’t like horseradish? Scale it back. Need more of a kick? Swap in a more potent hot sauce than Tabasco. Want your cocktail to be a full-on flavor bomb? Up the umami with a few extra dashes of Worcestershire sauce. In the case of the Bloody Mary, the mix makes the drink, so be thoughtful about it. And while you’re being thoughtful, go ahead and think to make this mix ahead of time. Not only do the flavors get better as they mellow and meld over time, but your hungover Sunday self will thank you for getting most of the work out of the way.
