Best Homemade Margarita Mix
Yes, you could go to the store right now and buy pre-made Margarita mix. But, we promise you it will not taste nearly as good as if you made the mix yourself. Most Margarita mixes—regardless of who makes them or if they’re craft products—are generally more sweet than sour. Even with natural sweeteners, mixes will lack the vibrant acidic kick of fresh squeezed lime juice, which is exactly what a good Marg needs. So if you want to make the best Margaritas at home, without having to squeeze limes for each drink individually, make your own DIY Margarita mix.
All you need to make the mix is a big bag of limes, a few oranges, some agave syrup (a combination of water and agave nectar) and sea salt. Simply press the citrus, add the juices to the agave syrup and voila, you are officially ready to make yourself a slew of Margaritas. If you want your mix to keep longer than a couple of days in the refrigerator, we suggest adding half a teaspoon of citric acid to the mix (which will extend the shelf life up to a week). The extra acid will not only act as a preservative, but also boost the flavor of the lime juice, making your Margarita even more bracingly sour. Don’t worry if citric acid seems like a difficult ingredient to find; you can buy it online. Best of all, once you buy one bag, you will have enough to make several batches of this mix.
- 0.5 Cup Water
- 0.5 Cup Agave
- 0.5 Cup Orange juice, freshly squeezed
- 2 cups Lime Juice
- 0.5 teaspoon Kosher Salt
- 0.5 teaspoon citric acid
Add the water, agave syrup and salt to a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until fully incorporated and homogenous. If using citric acid, add it while the mixture is still warm to the touch. Let cool to room temperature.
Add the fresh juice to the cooled syrup, and stir.
Bottle and refrigerate. Will keep for up to one week (with citric acid).
