Grog, in its original 18th century state, was not the most exciting cocktail. It was, simply, rum and water. Many stories attribute the drink’s creation to Vice Admiral Edward “Old Grogram” Vernon of the British Royal Navy who watered down his sailors’ rum rations in order to keep them on the slightly-more-sober side of drunk. He later allowed them to trade their bread and salt in for limes and sugar, which the sailors then smartly added to the rum and water. Grog, in its palatable state, was born.
