Gun Metal Blue

Gun Metal Blue Cocktail

Bright blue drinks aren’t usually prized for their subtlety, but trust us on this one. For being so shockingly blue, Nick Bennett’s Gun Metal Blue is also shockingly balanced. Bennett decided to work blue after visiting New Orleans and becoming fascinated by the bright green Bourbon Street tourist cocktail known as a Hand Grenade. As the recipe is proprietary, he resolved to make his own, less brain-wrecking version. “The few notes I found led me to peach and citrus flavors,” he says. “And obviously it had to be eye-catching.” Which is where the blue Curaçao came into the picture. To keep it from being too sweet (and to create cognitive dissonance when you taste it), Bennett added smoky mezcal and bitter cinnamon syrup. “The look of surprise and enjoyment I see when someone tastes it for the first time is awesome.”

Sweet, Sour

  • 1.5 oz Mezcal
  • .5 oz Blue Curaçao
  • .25 oz Peach Brandy
  • .75 oz Lime Juice
  • .25 oz Bitter Cinnamon Syrup
  • 1 Orange Rind Coin

Step one

First, make the Bitter Cinnamon Syrup.

Step two

After your syrup has cooled, you’re ready to mix up a beautiful blue cocktail. Pour a quarter-ounce of the bitter simple syrup and the remaining ingredients (minus the garnish) into a cocktail tin and add ice.

Step three

Shake the drink, then strain into a coupe (preferably chilled) and garnish with a flamed orange rind coin.
