The Ultimate DIY Electrolyte Drink

Ah, Gatorade. Once a hydrating sports drink you’d enjoy during soccer practice, it has since found duel purpose in drunken adulthood as a reliable hangover aid. But not without a downside: hues of electric yellow, red and blue created with artificial ingredients, and a flavor that is far from natural. Because we think chemicals are the last thing one should be ingesting when their body is dehydrated, we decided to create our own sports drink recipe that will rehydrate and replenish electrolytes without the use of unpronounceable ingredients or technicolor pigments.

Rehydrating with water works perfectly fine, but the process is more effective if you add vitamins, minerals and a little fructose to keep blood sugar levels from dipping. We turned to ingredients like potassium-rich coconut water, orange juice for a dose of immune-boosting vitamin C, and salt to aid the body with absorption. A pinch of ginger helps calm an upset stomach, and a touch of agave makes the whole thing go down in a cinch (which you can eliminate if you prefer the drink without added sugar). Simply toss all of these fresh and simple ingredients into a blender, strain, and voila—you have a DIY electrolyte drink that is au naturel.
