Kalimotxo

Supercall

While sipping on a glass of red wine, do you ever consider adding ice and topping it off with an equal amount of Coca-Cola? You should, because that’s exactly how this Spanish refresher is made. Though it sounds odd, the combination is incredibly popular, and has been since the 1970s. When first created, it was referred to as the Cuba Libre del pobre (the poor man’s Cuba Libre) or the Rioja Libre. But the drink was re-dubbed Kalimotxo (pronounced cali-mocho) and popularized when people finally caught onto just how great it was. The wine-and-soda amalgam’s allure has since spread throughout Europe and parts of America. It’s an easy and delicious way to use up the rest of that questionable boxed wine you’ve been hanging onto.
