Red wine and hot chocolate—why didn’t we think of this sooner? Rather than just pouring a bottle of Merlot into some powdered hot chocolate and hitting “start” on the microwave, we took the cozy cocktail to the next level with homemade hot chocolate and an insanely indulgent red velvet cake topping—cream cheese whipped cream included. While this drink is perfect for Valentine’s Day, it’s also great anytime you want to get together with your two BFFs: red wine and chocolate.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Cup milk
  • 1/3 Cup Red Wine
  • 45 g chocolate
  • 15 g chocolate
  • .5 tsp vanilla
  • .5 tsp red food coloring
  • pinch of salt
  • cream cheese whipped cream
  • red velvet cake

INSTRUCTIONS

Step one

In a small saucepan, heat milk over medium-high heat until hot and steaming but not boiling.

Step two

Reduce heat to low and whisk in wine, salt and chocolate until melted and warm, stirring constantly so that the chocolate doesn’t burn.

Step three

Remove from the heat and whisk in vanilla extract and red food coloring.

Step four

Pour into a mug and top with a dollop of cream cheese whipped cream, or pipe it on for a more delicate swirl. Sprinkle with red velvet cake crumbs, if desired.
