The original Lemon Drop Martini was created in the 1970s at Henry’s Africa in San Francisco, and was marketed towards single women; it was sweet, a pretty color and had the same name as a candy—basically everything a woman could ever want in a drink! Right? While we may not agree with the stereotypes of so-called “girly” drinks (there are just as many women who enjoy a stiff whiskey as there are men who enjoy a rosy Cosmopolitan), we can all agree that the drink is pretty delicious when made well—with fresh lemon juice and high quality vodka. The same is true for this fruity riff, which has a lovely red hue and pronounced berry flavor, thanks to a homemade strawberry syrup. Use plump, fresh strawberries to make syrup by reducing them with boiling water and sugar. The syrup adds a lovely strawberry aroma and round sweetness, which gets balanced by tart fresh lemon for an overall refreshing, vibrant cocktail. Just like the classic Lemon Drop, rim the coupe glass with superfine sugar for a fun crystalline visual and a tasty treat. Drink this Strawberry ‘Tini outside on the patio during summertime (when strawberries are at their peak), or anytime of year at happy hour when you need a liquid dose of sunshine.
