Vodka Gimlet

Vodka Gimlet

Armed with only fresh lime juice, simple syrup and almost any spirit on your bar cart, you can make an array of deliciously sweet-tart cocktails in the Sour family, from the sassy, tequila-spiked Margarita to the tropical rum Daiquiri to the junipery, gin-based Gimlet. But what’s a vodka lover to do? While vodka, lime juice and simple syrup doesn’t earn its own unique moniker, it does make for one heck of a tasty cocktail: the Vodka Gimlet. If you have an aversion to the potent botanical flavor in gin or have sworn off tequila for life, the Vodka Gimlet is the perfect tart cocktail to sip on. It’s bright and sour up front, with vodka’s rather neutral flavor letting the fresh lime juice shine (so make sure you use a nice and ripe lime). The traditional Gin Gimlet first appeared in print in The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930, but no one really knows exactly when people started to swap in vodka. A safe bet would be sometime between the 1940s—when cocktails like the Moscow Mule were taking off, and America was easing its aversion to Russian-produced products post World War II—and the 1960s, when people started committing blasphemy by ordering their Martinis with vodka instead of gin (we can thank James Bond for that one). Unlike the Martini, the Gimlet is suited for a spirit switcheroo, with many vodkas having a strong citrusy backbone. Some of our favorite vodkas to mix into a Gimlet include Bedlam Vodka, which has strong notes of citrus and tropical fruit, and Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka (made from the whey of cow’s milk), which has a yogurty tang that gives the Gimlet a creamy, key lime pie-esque flavor. And if you really wanted to go full throttle on the lime flavor, try mixing it with the new Absolut Lime for a truly mouth-puckering experience.
