Everything You Need to Know About RumChata

There’s a good chance you’ve come across a bottle of RumChata. It’s a gold-capped, stark-white bottle, with the words “RumChata” and “Horchata Con Ron” on the front. The milky white cream liqueur tastes of vanilla, cinnamon and joy. Once you’ve settled on the fact that it’s delicious and you want more, you might start to wonder, what exactly is this stuff? Here’s everything you need to know about RumChata, from how it’s made to the best RumChata cocktails.
RumChata Is the World’s First Rum-Based Cream Liqueur
There were other cream liqueurs before RumChata (Irish cream with an Irish whiskey base is one of the most prominent). But RumChata lays claim as the first to use a rum base, Bob Kopach, the director of public relations for RumChata, tells Supercall.
What’s in RumChata?
Here’s what we know: RumChata is made from five-times distilled Caribbean rum, fresh dairy cream from Wisconsin, cinnamon, vanilla and sugar. Exactly how much of each ingredient is proprietary, as are a few “other secret flavors,” Kopach says.
Where Can You Buy RumChata?
RumChata is available in every state and 28 countries.
When Did RumChata Start?
Founder Tom Maas, who has also worked on brands like Jack Daniel’s, Jim Beam and Knob Creek, created the RumChata recipe in his home kitchen. He wanted to put the flavors of horchata (a rice milk drink popular in Mexico) into a liqueur, and found rum to be the perfect base. The brand officially launched in 2009.
How Many Calories Are in a Shot of RumChata?
According to RumChata’s nutrition facts on the website, each 1.5 ounce serving has 140 calories. For comparison, that’s a little less than a Budweiser.
How Long Does RumChata Last in the Refrigerator?
Go ahead and take the bottle out of the fridge. The company says that RumChata doesn’t need to be refrigerated because “the cream has been homogenized with the rum, and the alcohol acts as a preservative.” An open bottle of RumChata will stay good for around six months at room temperature.
What Is the Alcohol Content of Rumchata?
RumChata is 13.75 percent alcohol by volume.
Are There Other Flavors?
The brand recently launched FrappaChata, which is a blend of RumChata and dark roast coffee. Now you can put RumChata in your coffee and in your FrappaChata iced coffee.
What to Mix with RumChata?
Try mixing RumChata with Fireball whisky for a Cinnamon Toast Crunch—it’s just as delicious as it sounds. And don’t let your experiments end there, because there are plenty of RumChata cocktails out there that are just as good (if not better) than sipping it straight on the rocks or in coffee.
