If you’re looking for the world’s most expensive bottle of tequila, be prepared to pay a pretty, diamond-encrusted penny. The Ley Diamante from Hacienda La Capilla comes in platinum bottle riddled with over 4,000 white diamonds. The liquid inside is extra añejo. And it costs $3.5 million. Is it worth it? Maybe. But we can’t say for sure having never come into a few extra million dollars that we were willing to spend on a single bottle of tequila.
We can tell you that the bottles below are worth it, though. They might not cost more than a Malibu mansion, but they still definitely qualify as a splurge. If you’ve already secured your everyday, under $30 bottle and you’re looking to open your wallet up for a special tequila, opt for one of these.
Yes, there is an expensive, high-end Cuervo, and yes, it is worth the price. Unlike the Cuervo of your college days, this one is not a mixto. It is made from 100 percent blue Weber agave and aged for a minimum of three years in French and American oak barrels. It’s toasty with some nutty notes and hints of orange zest—meant for sipping only. As a bonus, the wax-sealed bottle comes in a wooden box painted by a different Mexican artist every year.
Patrón was one of the first premium tequilas to appear on shelves in the U.S., and over the years the brand has continued to push the boundaries of the high-end tequila category. The brand’s Gran Patrón line is the top of the top. The Platinum offering within the line is triple distilled, rested for 30 days in oak tanks and then bottled in crystal bottles. It’s insanely smooth (we’re talking gulpable) with a warm, spiced finish.
Don’t be fooled by the swing top bottle. This extra añejo (a blend of three different tequilas aged in sherry, scotch and brandy casks) is well worth its double Franklins. It drinks like a fine, aged Cognac with concentrated flavors worth savoring. And, if you get bored of just drinking it, you can read the story written in script on the side of the bottle, which tells the tale of a heartbroken Aztec princess.
This crystal clear, small batch tequila is a blend of blanco tequila and extra añejo. It’s the brainchild of Bertha González Nieves, the first female Maestra Tequilera, who puts extreme care and time into every batch of 500 bottles (that’s very small production). Nieves created it to be the perfect sipping tequila, and she succeeded. It’s balanced and silky with a bright minerality that makes it a perfect pairing for food.
Another extra añejo, this one was aged for a full six years (one of the oldest on the market) in Napa Cabernet French white oak barrels. Like all of Codigo’s products, it is delicious, with flavors of baking spices, caramelized agave and a touch of vanilla. It’s the perfect end of the night sipper, poured into a wide-bellied snifter or just into a rocks glass. Try it with a bite of chocolate and thank us later.
