Arlington Stadium, or The Ballpark at Arlington?
Arlington Stadium. That's where I played, and that's where it all started for me. The new park is nice though...
So why the number "0", and was it hard giving it up when you went to the Indians?
Jim Brock, my coach in college, picked it because the 0 represents the first letter of my name. It wasn't hard to give up.
What led you to coach at Everglades, and are you sort of terrified of your school's mascot, the gator?
I was working with an old coach and friend, working with kids in Texas. I was a single guy, so I was able to move to Florida. And...no.
At what point do your players get to start calling you "Oddibe" instead of "Mr. McDowell" -- when they graduate, or never?Â
I'm not sure. They're good, respectable kids. They call me coach.
Better Chris Berman nickname: Oddibe "Young Again" McDowell, or Miguel "Tejada They Come, Tejada They Fall"?Â
Oddibe Young Again. Everyone wants to be young again. Chris Berman does come up with some good ones though.
Any outrageous Olympic Village stories about you and world-class athletes of the female persuasion? Or about Will Clark and world-class athletes of the female persuasion?Â
Okay, but did you know Will Clark's middle name was "Nuschler"?
Wait, what is it?
In '86, were you thinking about history when you broke up Roger Clemens' no-hitter after 7 2/3rds?
We all knew he had it going. I just went and tried to hit it.
You were traded to Cleveland as part of a package for Julio Franco. If Julio is playing baseball in 2050, possibly for a Martian colony, or maybe the Royals, will you be surprised?
No. Not at all. He stays in shape and takes care of himself.
Was Mitch Williams wild 24/7, or did he have a not-wild side? Like, did he secretly read Sweet Valley High novels and dream about going to the prom?
No, he had a not-wild side. He just had plenty of energy, so not everyone got to see it.
Jose Canseco just got busted for having his twin impersonate him in a celebrity boxing match. If you had a twin, what would you use him for?
I'd just use him as a decoy.
MLB's been through a lot the past two decades. How do you feel about the state of the game today?
There's always controversy, which sells. But the game still has talent, it's still good. I don't like all of it, but it's still good.
Okay, that's pretty much all we have.
Okay, great. Can't believe that about Will Clark's name though. That's just... [laughs again]
