Conspiracy: General Motors killed the streetcar
Pretty much any big corporation will at some point be compared to big brother by people who love making up conspiracy theories, and one of the nation's largest corporations proves no exception. Tinfoil-hat-wearers believe GM, along with Firestone, Standard Oil, Phillips Petroleum, and Mack Trucks, gave cars a bump in their early days by following a business plan that looks something like this:
Step 1: Build cars
Step 2: Destroy streetcars
Step 3: ????
Step 4: PROFIT!!!
In doing so, Americans were forced to use buses, or buy cars and fuel. And if you've ever been held hostage on a public bus, well, you'd probably choose the car option 10/10 times. Goodbye streetcars, hello tons of $$$ for big companies.
