Terrifying Hippo Caught on Video Leaping After Tourists

Hippos are so cute at the zoo. In the wild, however, they're gigantic monsters that kill nearly 3,000 people per year.

Tourists on a recent adventure safari in Botswana nearly found out the hard way after a massive hippo began chasing their speedboat along the Chobe River. Despite its mammoth size, the beast's surprisingly quick, at one point lunging out of the water, Loch Ness Monster-style, to catch up to the boat.

Thankfully, the driver sped up enough to escape the animal's advance, and the tourists got away unscathed. Keep that death stat in mind as you watch the 30-second clip -- and the next time you're playing Hungry Hungry Hippos. That game's a death trap.
