San Francisco Spends More on Valentine's Day Than Any Other US City

For decades, Tony Bennett has crooned about how he left his heart in San Francisco. Well, pretty much every other dude there leaves their paychecks -- or so says a new study about which American cities spend the most on Valentine's Day.

According to recent data from finance software firm Mint, Bay Area residents spend more than any other city in the nation on giant teddy bears, heart-shaped balloons, and candlelit dinners. The data compared how much denizens of the 10 largest US cities splurge on overpriced goods and services for Feb. 14, finding San Franciscans spend as much as $230 on hotels, $82 on gifts, and $34 on dinner. Which, the restaurant thing is weirdly low. Presumably everyone in San Francisco’s idea of a romantic meal entails hammering down free breadsticks at Olive Garden.

The Golden City’s followed closely by New York, where folks spoil their SOs to the tune of $95 on gifts and $36 on another surprisingly cheap dinner. Seriously, where are these people eating dinner for so cheap in SF and NYC? Regardless, Houston takes third place, where Valentine’s Day sets locals back approx. $78 on gifts, and $29 for dinner.

Mint estimates Americans will spend $142.31 on average this Valentine's Day, including the cost of tickets to see Fifty Shades of Grey. **shudder**
