Berlin’s best crash pads for work, pleasure, and play
Berlin's got a lot of hotels to choose from, and to make sure you're not longing for a reunification with your own bed, you'll want to pick just the right one. Hence this rundown of the German capital's finest sleeperies for every occasion and budget.
The business for business:
The Mandala Potsdamer Strasse 3; +49.030.590050000
If you're working for The Man, you should be staying at The Mandala -- set among the skyscrapers of Potsdamer Platz, this sleeper gives you access to both East & West Berlin, w/ huge rooms full of neat perks, like walk-in closets, spa-like marble bathrooms, and small kitchenettes, which you will completely ignore in favor of dinner at the double-Michelin Facil, on the atrium level.
For a slightly more modest investment:
Hotel Amano Auguststrasse 43; +49.030.8094150
With 163 apartment-style rooms and a sweet location in the heart of Mitte -- next to some of the area's newer restaurants, galleries, and boutiques -- this self-described "budget design hotel" is a great place to stay for a work trip. They've got a cocktail bar, a rootop lounge, and a 'za spot named Pizza Mario, which sounds super.
For a baller time:
nHow Berlin Stralauer Allee 3; +49.030.2902990
Rock out for the weekend at nHow Berlin, which offers a nearby location to Friedrichshain's Spree River-side clubs and parties, as well as their own monthly open mic night at the futuristic, neon-outfitted Envy bar. For the truly inspired musician, 24-hour room service offers guitars and keyboards
and hopefully some kind of soundproofing, and the place is home to two recording studios, where the likes of N.E.R.D. and Erykah Badu have laid down tracks.
For a baller time, with a JV price-tag:
Hotel Michelberger Warschauer Strasse 39-40; +49.030.29778590
Falling at the lower-end of the cash-splash spectrum, this former warehouse attracts hipsters, backpackers, and bohos. Go super-modest, and pack the whole clan into the WG (flatshare with room for six), or live slightly more luxuriously in the "Band"; a spacious roomshare w/ lofted bed that'll sleep four. Oh, and did we mention they have a foosball table, whiskey room, DJ'd lobby bar, and even their own cinema? No? Well, they do. Enjoy 'em.
If you're in town for some no-expense-spared romance:
Das Stue Drakestrasse 1; +49.030.3117220
This brand new hotel is tucked on the edge of Tiergarten Park, and'll help you escape from the grit of the city via marble staircases, mod art, and all manner of fancy amenities. The ritzy shopping hot-spot Ku'damm avenue is just around the corner (plus -- thank god -- nearby beirgarten Café am Neun See), and the hotel has an in-house concierge who'll arrange a rowboat for you and your lady to take out on a nearby lake.
Or for pleasing both your lady and your wallet:
Arte Luise Kunsthotel Luisenstrasse 19; +49.030.284480
Blatantly show off your refined style with this affordable pick, where you can stay the night in an art gallery-cum-boutique hotel. Choose between 50 rooms designed by international artists, incl. a suspended “flying” bed, the red-light Cabaret room, or a room decked in some hippie Uzbek décor. Located along the Spree River, near the Reichstag and Tiergarten, the hotel offers a great central location, too. Stop showing off, hotel!
