The food: This lovingly restored building, formerly Tobacco Rhoda’s, now houses an upscale, casual bistro featuring a seasonal menu that fuses the best of Southern California cuisine with modern French execution. The menu is conveniently divided into courses that you can mix and match, or choose the four-course prix fixe option. Standout starters include lobster toast with lemon brown butter and red-veined sorrel on brioche, or citrus-poached shrimp, tomato jam and house-made chips. Noteworthy entrees include Cornish game hen with fall vegetables and potato gnocchi, and New York strip with red wine and bone marrow reduction. A half-dozen cocktails, beer, and wine by the glass round out the menu, and a short bar menu provides munchies like shrimp puffs, roasted pork belly, and fried oysters. Brunch is only served on Sundays.
The cost: Starters run $15-21, entrees are $17-35, or choose a four-course prix fixe menu for $69, bar snacks are $15-17. Cocktails are $15, beer and wine by the glass runs $7-18.
