Happy hour: Monday all day; Tuesday–Friday, 12–6 pm
Introduce yourself to smoky, sexy mezcal at Cantina Mayahuel, where over 100 different mezcals, sotols, bacanoras, and racillas line the wall behind the bar and happy hour is one of the longest in the city. Modelo Negro and Tecate cans are a mere $3; margaritas, palomas, and shots are just $5.50 and can be made with tequila blanco, reposado, or mezcal joven. Order a couple of plates of street tacos at three for $8 and you’ve got the quintessential San Diego happy hour experience.
In a city with no shortage of phenomenal Mexican eateries, Cantina Mayahuel’s food menu isn’t the most groundbreaking. (Except for the carnitas street tacos, which are ridiculously good.) No, the real jewel of this Normal Heights cantina is its collection of premium tequilas and mezcals. From classic margaritas to rare bottles, the agave-based spirits selection is second-to-none, and the experts behind the bar are always happy to shake things up with their own spins. They’re open Tuesday-Sunday from noon-10pm, and happy hour runs from noon to 6pm, Tuesday through Friday, with specials on tacos, margaritas, and Palomas, making it the ideal time to sample a little of everything.
How to order: Indoor and patio seating is available on a first-come basis.
