Carolina's Mexican Food
Chef and namesake Carolina Valenzuela has been at the helm of this beloved Mexican kitchen since 1968, building this bare-bones restaurant into a local landmark over the years thanks to her top-notch Sonoran-style dishes. Operating in the same white-washed brick building (with "Carolina's" painted in red on the outside) since it opened, this Phoenix institution compensates for its lackluster appearance with bold flavor in classics like tacos, chimichangas, flautas, enchiladas, and tamales. It even makes for an ideal breakfast joint -- you can order burros with chorizo, egg, and potatoes in the AM hours, which come wrapped in Carolina's fan-favorite flour tortillas (large, paper-thin, and chewy).
Like burritos and tacos, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Don’t let the hole-in-the-wall demeanor of this tried-and-true Mexican food institution hold you back from experiencing the nirvana that is Carolina’s iconic, cheese-covered combo plates. The Original Carolina’s is famous for their incredible tortillas, rightfully so. Other main attractions like the crispy Chimichangas and footlong Chorizo Burritos are what keep Carolina’s devotees coming back again and again.
